Harlem's finest, and one of America's finest boys' choirs, brings us a powerful collection of 14 authentic spirituals. The arrangements are by some of the best in the world. The King's Singers explore the folk songs and melodies of the world in a new program entitled Postcards. "In our travels we have amassed a wonderful collection of folk songs and popular songs from numerous countries, many of which we use as encores when we visit," said KS, "The influences and sources are extraordinarily far-ranging, and each song has its own local characteristics. To celebrate the diversity of music that we perform and the numerous countries we visit each concert season, we have recorded an album of some of our favorite folk songs from around the world."

Pride of Elk River, MN, the Choirboys are nationally and internationally known as one of the best boys' choirs in the world. One of the most popular music ensembles at Northfield, MN's St. Olaf College is the 100-strong Manitou Singers, comprised of 100 first year women's voices. Manitou sings at the opening worship service of the college; at daily chapel and church services, the annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival, its own Spring concert and others. Their repertoire includes the sacred, the secular and even popular ballads. On "Repertoire for Women's Voices, Vol. 6," well-respected Director Sigrid Johnson leads Manitou's clear, soaring voices in 18 beautiful, mostly piano-accompanied songs; some favorites are Gyorgy Orban's 4-part "Mass #6," a pair by David M. Childs, "I Am Not Yours" and "She Walks In Beauty;" a pair by Joan Szymko, "The Peace of Wild Things" and "I Dream A World;" Z. The elite Troubadors of Oakland's Pacific Boychoir Academy are joined by Continuum, a group of former boy choristers whose voices have changed, and soloist Jonathon Hampton, to sing this strong collection of 19 African-American spirituals, directed by Kevin Fox. Favorites are "Ain't Got Time to Die," "City Called Heaven," "Precious Lord" and "Wade in the Water," all of which features Hampton's smooth countertenor; "Over Yonder," which features soloist Jacob Wilson; "Deep River," "The Battle of Jericho" and "Hear My Prayer." There is some light accompaniment. The soloists contrast nicely with the Troubadors' sweet, high background vocals, particularly Hampton's rich leads. A special, beautifully performed collection!

This is a great recording for children to be introduced to music of African cultures, gospel, both traditional and original African-American children's songs and supportive songs for growing youngsters. "I Got Shoes" could well be considered for very young children. A series of five "African Numbers" has vocal backgrounds of African texture on top of which are counted numbers in English (1-20), Japanese (1-12), Swahili (1-8), French (1-10) and Spanish (1-16). There is a rap song featuring a refrain by the Sweet Honey In The Rock Children's Chorus which deals with ethics on a young persons level. It is entitled "Young and Positive" and tells kids that they are the future and how to keep their sights set high. There is the archetypical Sweet Honey message in "Freedom Train." The whole recording is like a composition that ends with one of the most beautiful songs they have ever sung, "Spirit Lullaby." Sweet Honey is extraordinary!
